Black and White Halloween Tablescape: How to Create a Unique Table

It’s tablescape day friends! Today I’m sharing a black and white Halloween tablescape and how to create a unique table.

I joined a team of blogger friends almost 3 years ago for a monthly virtual dinner club.

We decide on a different theme every month. Then we each create a tablescape with our interpretation of that theme.

It has been so fun seeing all of the great ideas this group comes up with. It also challenges me to think outside the box when creating my tables.

This month is all about Halloween. And since I’m am all about neutrals, I decided to go with a (mostly) black and white theme.

what do you put on a Halloween tablescape

When I begin styling a tablescape of any kind, I look through my house for things I already have that will go with my theme.

In the case of Halloween, I went through my tubs of seasonal decor. I pulled out anything that would work with my black and white theme Halloween table setting.

If you don’t already have a stock of Halloween decorations and want to create a table on a budget, a dollar store like Dollar General and Dollar Tree are your best friends.

Also, craft stores like Hobby Lobby and also Walmart have great options of seasonal things at a very reasonable price.

Thrifting is one of my favorite past times, so I like to pick up seasonal things when I see them.

It’s the perfect place to find great seasonal items right after each holiday. A lot of people will clean out and donate things after they take down the decorations.

For my black and white Halloween table, I started with a black check tablecloth on my patio dining table. I bought the tablecloth at a thrift store several years ago.

My favorite dishes, Emma Bridgewater Black Toast Pottery, that are white with black wording around the edge worked perfectly for this table.

I love to layer the plates at each of my place settings. So, on top of the EB dinner plate, I layered white salad plates with a black striped rim.

Then, topped it with an orange transferware saucer that I found a few years ago at a vendor mall in Waco, Texas.

I love transferware plates and had never seen the orange pattern before, so I grabbed all 6 of them. Then I came home and did a search and found a few more on Etsy.

The pattern is Copeland Madrid by Spode and they were the perfect addition to this table.

A linen white napkin tied with a black stripe ribbon was placed beside each place setting. Next, I tucked in a small witches broom ornament I bought last year at the dollar store.

A plastic black glitter spider decoration, that was also purchased at the dollar store a couple of years ago, rests on the side of each plate.

You don’t need to have all of these same items to recreate this table.

Basic white plates, black plates, black napkins, a white or black tablecloth, and black candles would all work just as well for this black and white color scheme table.

A few years ago, I started picking up jack-o-lanterns at thrift stores, garage sales and discount stores.

When I had collected quite a few, I spray painted all of them white to use for Halloween decor.

One year I used them on the entry table and the next year they filled the top of my kitchen hutch.

I like to change up my seasonal decor each year, so I was happy to use them for a tablescape this year, to change it up a little bit.

They made a great centerpiece for my black and white Halloween table. 

Black felt placemats shaped like spider webs, also from the dollar store a few years ago, made a great Halloween table runner.

I just placed 4 of them side by side down the center of the table.

My Mackenzie Childs cake stand which is black and white check was the perfect centerpiece riser for my largest pumpkin placed in the middle of the table.

I attached a black crow ornament to the edge of the pumpkin just to add a little spooky decor.

The other jack o lanterns were randomly placed down the center of the table. I faced them different directions so that some of the jack-o-lantern faces were visible on both sides of the table.

I added white candles (tealight or votive candle) to the jack o lanterns that didn’t come with a battery operated light inside.

When they are lit, it makes a fun atmosphere for the Halloween dinner party.

To add height in places, I used vintage books with a black cover. I have a collection of vintage books, but these are always available at thrift shops and often at estate sales and garage sales.

I placed a couple of the smaller pumpkins on a plate from my EB pottery collection to add a little interest and pattern.

Lastly, a few brass vintage candlesticks were scattered throughout the pumpkins.

I used a piece of black gauzy fabric from the Halloween decor aisle at the craft store to anchor a taper in the candle holders.

This just added a bit of a “spooky” vibe to my table scape.
