I found a large papier mache bunny at a thrift store a couple of years ago. It had awful faux flowers and greenery hot glued on it.
I removed the tacky decorations from the bunny, but never did anything else with it.
This year, when I pulled my bins of Spring decor out, I was determined to do something with the cute bunny shape.
My first thought was to cover it with moss, but I had already made a moss covered bunny a couple of years ago and kind of wanted something different.

inspiration for a diy floral decoupage bunny

I was rummaging through my collection of decorative paper napkins and ran across a package of Mackenzie-Childs pattern napkins.
A friend had gifted these to me quite a while ago and I was saving them for the perfect occasion.
I decided to try decoupaging the white Flower Market floral pattern napkins on my papier mache bunny.
I absolutely love how this adorable Spring bunny turned out!

supplies for a diy decoupage bunny
papier mache bunny shape (you could also use a wooden bunny shape if you can’t find papier mache)
white spray paint (if your form isn’t already white)
paper napkins of your choice (the size of your rabbit form will determine how many you need)
mod podge
paint brush
scissors
ribbon (optional)

a few tips before you begin the decoupage diy
Be sure and cover the surface you are working on.
The Mod Podge can be quite messy and rolling out wax paper, brown kraft paper, or even a wrapping paper makes for easy clean up and protects your table or countertop.
You can usually find brown kraft paper rolls at the Dollar Tree. I keep rolls on hand for this very reason.
If you prep your napkins before you start the project, it will go much faster.
Since your hands will get messy from the Mod Podge, you won’t have to clean your hands often during the project if all of your napkin pieces are cut ahead of time.
Also, you will want to prep you paper mache piece ahead of time. More about this below.
how to prep your papier mache bunny for decoupage
My rabbit form was white when I bought it.
As I mentioned, I thrifted it and it had lots of faux flowers glued to it.
I think whoever the previous owner was must have spray painted the bunny white.
Most of the time, if you purchase a papier mache form, it will be a brown paper color.
It is a good idea to spray paint your form white unless you are using dark napkins.
Otherwise, the brown color of the paper mache form will show through your napkin once it is adhered to the form.
You can just use an inexpensive can of spray paint to accomplish this step.
instructions – how to decoupage a napkin on a papier mache form

I pressed my napkins with a warm iron to smooth out the creases. I used 3 napkins for this project.
This isn’t entirely necessary, because most likely, the wrinkles will come out when you apply them to the Mod Podge.
Most paper napkins come with 2 or 3 layers.
You will want to separate the layers and use only the top layer with the pattern on it.

Next, you will cut the designs/shapes you want to use out of the napkin.
I cut fairly large pieces to begin, then cut smaller pieces to fill in as I got more of the rabbit form covered.
You will paint a thin layer of Mod Podge in an area on the paper mache form, then gently lay the napkin piece on top.
You can smooth the napkin out, if needed, with your finger or the paintbrush.
It is fine to get Mod Podge on top of the napkin, as well.
It will help the napkin piece to adhere well, and the Mod Podge dries clear so it won’t show when you are all finished.

Continue working all around the form until you have the look you are happy with.
You can see in the photo above that my papier mache bunny form wasn’t smooth. It had a very bumpy texture to it, but it didn’t affect the project at all.

a Mackenzie-Childs inspired bunny for Spring
For my bunny, I used a Mackenzie-Childs paper napkin in the white Flower Market pattern.
The edge of the napkin had the Mackenzie-Childs signature black and white check and I definitely wanted to incorporate that into my custom rabbit decor piece.
I removed the black and white check border off of the napkin and saved it until the end.
I cut large sections of the floral design and began adding it to my bunny form.
Once most of the bunny was covered with larger pieces, I cut smaller flower shapes out of the napkin and filled in any area that seemed blank.
I thought about using the black and white check border around the rabbit’s neck, but I wanted to use a large black and white striped bow there.
Instead, I added a border of the black and white check around the bottom edge of my bunny.

finishing touch for a easy DIY decoupage floral bunny for Spring decor
To finish off my floral bunny, I tied a wide black and white striped ribbon around the bunnies neck.
Black and white check would have been very cute too, but unfortunately I didn’t have any on hand.
But, I love how the striped ribbon looks.
Another cute idea would be to hot glue small spring flowers, that coordinate with your napkin colors, around the bunnies neck.

This was such an easy craft project for a custom designed Spring decor piece.
I’m so pleased with how it turned out.
I am currently working on another one for a gift for a friend with a Spring birthday.
This unique bunny rabbit would be so cute with your Spring or Easter decorations on an entry table, coffee table, or dining table.
A collection of papier mache bunnies in different shapes and sizes with a mixture of patterns would be so cute together for Spring decor.
I hope you will try this easy DIY decoupage floral bunny for Spring decor for your own home.
I would love to hear if you do!
blessings,
