My back porch is really an extension of our home. When we designed the farmhouse we really wanted an outdoor living space that flowed right from the common areas of our home. We added 3 sets of french doors from the kitchen/living area of our home, so we could open them onto our back patio as an additional place to entertain.

We use it often, except in the summer months. The back of our home faces west, so it is super hot here in Texas during the heat of the summer. The other times of year, it gets lots of use.

We enclosed the patio with 2, eight foot clear glass garage doors. So, we have the option to open the space up to the outdoors or leave them closed. Since the garage doors are clear, it makes the space feel larger, and less closed in, even when they are closed.

We have a fireplace out there, so we can light the fire, and open the sets of french doors. It heats up fairly quickly, which is really nice this time of year.

Typically, it’s just my husband and me, so we enjoy eating out there or watching a movie, since we have a TV over the fireplace.

We also added a sink and prep area for when we grill outside.

This year, I kept the decor pretty simple out here. I only used things I already had. Just a few touches of Christmas, here and there, and a bit of fresh greenery.
For the fireplace mantel, I used some white pine floral picks that I had. I didn’t have quite enough to cover the entire mantel, so I used a few branches from a white vintage Christmas tree that I wasn’t using this year. The “white” branches are now cream color because they have aged.

I added a couple of trees from my white Christmas tree collection, to each end of the mantel. And adorned the front with some corregated metal letters that say “JOY”. The letters are tied with torn fabric strips and thumbtacked to the mantel.

This mantel is definitely a favorite piece of mine. I purchased it on a local online garage sale shortly after we moved into the farmhouse. It was in a 100 year old home being torn down and they sold it for $100.

The side table to my couch was my great grandmothers. It has a removable glass top and I love changing things out for the seasons. For Christmas, I used a calligraphy sign with the lyrics to Silent Night, a tree shape cut from a piece of sheet music and a couple of sprigs of fresh greenery.

The candlesticks on the table are Aidan Gray and were purchased at a thrift store for $17.50 for the pair (you can find similar ones here). I like to use old spools of twine and thread on top of candlesticks sometimes, instead of candles. Part of the reason I do this on the porch is because the candles melt in the warmer months.

I added a small vintage Christmas tree to a washstand that I typically use to ice down drinks when we entertain. It has tiny white lights and I chose to leave it, as is, with no decorations.

I typically set the table for the holiday season, but I opted for a more simple and casual tablescape this time. I used an old carpenters box I bought at a resale shop last year, and stacked some of my mismatched white plates.

There are sets of silverware in the leather pockets inside the box (I assume these were for tools or paintbrushes) and fabric napkins tucked on the backside of the box. (You can find my vintage inspired silverware here).

This will make it easy to grab a plate, napkin and eating utensils for buffet style serving.

I have waiters aprons on the backs of the chairs, with sprigs of fresh greenery. The inspiration came from a vintage apron I found in my office a few months ago. I went on a search online to find more so I could use them on all of the chairs.

For my thanksgiving tablescape, I tucked the silverware and a napkin in one of the pockets.

I added a wreath, pinecone tree and a simple floral arrangement I made from fresh greens and a bundle of grocery store roses to my sink area. You can find the pinecone Christmas tree tutorial here.

Lastly, I get lots of questions about the flooring on the porch. It is thin bricks and I use sisal rugs under the dining table and living space. We also have this flooring in our laundry room, a guest bathroom and the front porch.
