How We Renovated an Airbnb Cottage – Part 4

I hope you’ve been enjoying the cottage makeover series. And thanks so much for following along and all the kind words! I truly appreciate it and it makes my heart happy. Today, is the final part of the tour. Come along and let me show you “How We Renovated an Airbnb Cottage – Part 4”.

Today, I want to take you on a tour of the kitchen and dining area. The dining area just might be my favorite room!!

The kitchen in the cottage is fairly large, but very dated. It had dark vinyl floors, and the walls were paneling which was the dingy tan paint like the rest of the house.

The cabinets were already freshly painted white and it had this butcher block center island piece.

We left the paneling and painted it white. I liked that it added another texture instead of just sheetrock walls. And we replaced the flooring with light wood laminate floors like the rest of the house.

The cabinets were in good shape, as well as the appliances, so we left those.

I replaced the fixture over the sink with a small vintage chandelier that I bought for $90.
I added a valance to the window. These are the same as the valances I used in the master bedroom that I had left from my shop.

I ordered a turkish rug for this room to put under the island piece and the trash can is a wicker hamper.

The other side of the kitchen has a small table and chairs where guests can sit and enjoy morning coffee.

The table was a thrifted find that I painted gray and the 2 chairs were a yard sale purchase for $15 each.

This shutter was part of a pair that I bought at Canton Trade Days. I split up the pair and used the other one in the hallway bathroom (Part Two of the tour).

As I have already mentioned, I don’t care for mini blinds. But, the ones in this house were in great shape, so we didn’t really need to replace them.

So, I tried to camoflauge them in most rooms with some type of decorative window treatment.

This particular window treatment is a vintage tablecloth I had at home.

I folded the tablecloth over, to get the length I wanted. Then, I sewed chain links to the edge of the cloth. I saved the links when we shortened the chandelier chain to hang over the sink.

Then I used eye screws on each side of the window and strung a piece of wire. The links were threaded onto the wire for the window treatment to hang on.

There are open shelves on the opposite side of the kitchen that really were too small to serve any purpose, so I filled them with plants and baskets to create some texture and color.

I created a coffee bar at this end of the kitchen and used the open shelving as a place to store coffee mugs and saucers.

Different sweeteners, creamers and coffee pods are left for guests to enjoy, as well as wine.

The dining room is one of the two rooms that had original hardwood floors.

The walls in this room were the tan color, just like the rest of the house. This room also had a ceiling fan.

We painted the walls white, and in case you missed the color, I used Sherwin Williams Snowdrift, but had it mixed at Home Depot in Behr paint.

We left the original hardwood floors in here and I added a jute rug I purchased at IKEA.

I used slipcovered chairs on either end of the table. One of them I already had, and the other one I found on Facebook Marketplace for $50.

I bought a set of 4 woven chairs for either side of the table, also from FB Marketplace for $100 for the set.

The french style table, also FB Marketplace, got a coat of paint and a little distressing. I bought the table for $75, and it has 3 leaves. I only used 1 of them, because it is huge, with all three.

We replaced the ceiling fan with this amazing vintage chandelier that I found for $250. This was one of my biggest decor purchases in this house.

I gathered vintage white plates at thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets to create this plate gallery wall.

A friend of mine was moving and getting rid of lots of things, so she sold several things to me for a great price.

One of them was this amazing chippy column.

I had this huge tumbleweed that a friend brought to me from West Texas several years ago. I didn’t have a place in my own home to use it, so it had been stored in my garage for a long time.

When I was working on the decor for the cottage, I took it with me one day hoping to find a home for it. I put it on top of the column, just to get it out of the way while I was decorating one day, and when I turned around and looked at it later, I loved it right there.

The pie safe I purchased from a neighbor at our neighborhood garage sale and the shutters on either side were gifted by another sweet friend.

The shutters have a star cut out of them and it was a bit too rustic so I looked and looked for something the right size, that would cover them.

I was about to give up and I found these wall baskets and I was able to hide the star cutouts by hanging the baskets and adding dried roadside flowers.

The vintage basket on top was another thrifted find.

And lastly, for the centerpiece in this room, I used a linen table runner and a woven basket tray to anchor my centerpiece.

I brought the swan I had done a makeover on in the Spring, from my own house, and added dried hydrangeas. I cut the hydrangeas from my garden and let them dry and they were the perfect addition to the swan.

The finishing touch was some stacked vintage books.
